Virginia Law Prohibits appointing certain persons as guardian or conservator

On April 2, 2020 Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed into law SB1072, a bill introduced by Senators Jennifer McClellan and Monty Mason, that prohibits hospitals from appointing certain persons as guardians or conservators (i.e. their attorneys as guardians of their patients). The law takes effect on July 1, 2020.

The first step in the right direction of reforming guardianship laws in Virginia. We will continue moving forward until we put a stop to guardianship abuse and abuse by guardians including hospitals.
